Best Ways to Care for Polished Concrete Floors

Concrete floors are a very low-maintenance flooring option for your home or business. When properly kept, they can last for years and years. However, they do require some maintenance to keep them looking their best and functioning as efficiently as they did on day one of installation.

The process for cleaning your polished concrete floors is not difficult nor tedious. But it does take care to make sure you don’t accidentally damage your floors. While replacing your concrete floors would be a massive and expensive task, taking basic steps to keep them clean will pay off in the long run and save you hassle later on down the road.

Here are our top tips for caring for your polished concrete floors:

  • Immediately wipe up any spills with a cloth or towel. Leaving them for too long can permanently stain your concrete.

  • Clean your floors daily with a microfibre dust mop (like a Swiffer Sweeper). This will pick up any dirt, lint and debris from the floor which can get in the way when scrubbing the floors (if needed). It will also decrease the risk of slips and reduce health risks associated with dust buildup.

  • Don’t wash with water alone. This can actually damage your floor over time, and isn’t very effective in removing dirt. It also recommended that you avoid abrasive solutions such as bleach or ammonia. Instead, use a floor cleaner with a neutral pH– perhaps even one specifically designed for polished concrete floors.

  • For any major clean, the first step should always be to damp mop using a mixture of your preferred neutral cleaner and water. Then, before cleaning solution dries, mop it with a wet mop (saturated only with water).

  • If needed or desired, use a steam mop to give your floors an even deeper clean. These mops use heat to disinfect your floors and slightly abrasive pads to pick up any bits of dirt. They also leave a cleaner (i.e. less streaky) floor than using traditional mops.

Not all of these cleaning methods need to be done on a regular basis. You will know best what kind of traffic your property gets, what the nature of your business or residence is and how often a clean is necessary. That being said, if you are a business, you probably require more frequent concrete maintenance.
